April 8
On April 8, 1968, BOAC Flight 712 from Heathrow Airport bound for Australia was immediately destroyed by an engine fire shortly after takeoff.
As fire blocked different exits from the aircraft once it controlled to land, 22-12 months-old flight attendant Barbara Jane Harrison single-handedly guided and pushed dozens of passengers down the getaway chute.
Harrison helped save lives by shoving passengers out the door as the escape chute burnt away.
Causes of World War II:
The immediate cause of the war was the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, which triggered the involvement of other European countries in the conflict. However, the roots of the war can be traced back to the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I but left many issues unresolved, including the rise of nationalism, economic instability, and territorial disputes. The failure of the League of Nations to prevent aggression by Germany, Italy, and Japan also contributed to the outbreak of war.
Events of World War II:
The war began with the lightning-fast invasion of Poland by Germany in September 1939, followed by the Blitzkrieg (lightning war) tactics used by the Germans to conquer much of Europe. The war also involved major battles in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific, including the Battle of Stalingrad, the Battle of Midway, and the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The war ended with the unconditional surrender of Germany and Japan, after the use of atomic bombs by the United States on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Impact of World War II:
The impact of the war was felt around the world, as it resulted in the deaths of millions of people, the displacement of millions more, and the destruction of entire cities and economies. The war also had far-reaching political and social consequences, including the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as superpowers, the beginning of the Cold War, and the formation of the United Nations. The war also had a profound impact on the lives of ordinary people, as it led to the rise of new technologies, changes in social norms, and the growth of the global economy.
Conclusion:
World War II was a global conflict that changed the world forever, with profound consequences that are still felt today. The war was caused by a complex set of factors and involved major events and battles that shaped the outcome of the conflict. The war had a profound impact on countries all over the world and led to a new era of global politics, economics, and society. As we reflect on the legacy of World War II, we are reminded of the importance of peace, cooperation, and understanding in the modern world.
